‘Seven One Eight’
(The Written Collection, 2022)
Some moments seem insignificant when they first appear, only revealing their importance with time.
‘Seven One Eight’ holds one of those moments.
The numbers have their own story, but their meaning is deliberately left unexplained. The colours perhaps reveal a little more. Purple moves between darkness and light, carrying with it a sense of chance, uncertainty and something unexpected beginning to emerge.
Warmer tones gradually find their way through — reds and oranges appearing with greater intensity, suggesting a shift from something tentative into something altogether deeper.
There is hesitation within ‘Seven One Eight’, but also possibility. A sense of standing somewhere between what has been and what might be, without knowing where taking that next step will lead.
The story behind it is mine.
What ‘Seven One Eight’ means beyond that, I prefer to leave within the painting.
Sometimes inspiration is simply found in what we see around us.
I often watch the sailboats racing across the bay from our home — their white sails scattered across the water, constantly shifting with the wind. It’s one of those familiar sights that has quietly become part of what Nelson means to me.
With this piece, I wanted to try something a little different and explore a more abstract style of painting. Rather than trying to recreate the view exactly, I wanted to capture the feeling of it — the movement of the boats, the flashes of white sails, reflections on the water and all those beautiful shades of blue that seem to merge into one another.
I love that abstract art doesn't have to give us every detail. Sometimes just a few shapes, marks and colours are enough to take us somewhere familiar.
For me, this one takes me home.

‘Peacock’ is something of an abstract self-portrait, exploring the contradiction between wanting to remain unnoticed and somehow finding myself in the spotlight.
Beneath the muted surface, a subtle line emerges, interrupted by a bold stroke of red. Darker tones receive into the background, while the subtle flowing line represents a quiet outline of myself.
‘Peacock’ explores the delicate space between what is revealed and what remains unseen - a quiet contradiction between standing out and disappearing and a personal story of vulnerability and the desire to remain unseen.
