Works that resonate with understated elegance

Inge is a contemporary artist based in Nelson, New Zealand, who has painted throughout her life. Creativity has long been a natural form of expression for her, with her artwork becoming something of a visual diary — reflecting different periods, experiences, thoughts and emotions along the way.

Working primarily through contemporary abstract art, Inge creates intuitively, allowing personal meaning to find its way onto the canvas through colour, texture, form and simplicity. While her work can be deeply personal, she deliberately leaves space for individual interpretation, believing that a piece of art can hold an entirely different meaning for the person viewing it than it does for the person who created it.

She approaches her art quietly and without pretension, creating because it is something she has always loved to do and because, sometimes, a canvas can express what words cannot.

“For me, painting is less about creating something that needs to be explained and more about capturing something that has been felt. My work moves between different periods, colours and styles, reflecting the changing experiences of life itself. Some pieces are quiet and restrained, while others use stronger colour, repetition and written language. What connects them is their personal origin and the freedom they leave for interpretation.

I believe that once a painting leaves my hands, its meaning no longer has to belong solely to the person who created it. A viewer may see something entirely different within a piece — and for me, that individual connection is part of what makes art so meaningful” ~ Inge
